The International Postcard Show, an extreme popular and long-running exhibition held at Surface Gallery in Nottingham, is upon us! Opening night is Friday 13th and there is still so much to do! We’ve spent the last week putting up shelves, sweeping, mopping, collecting and organising all the postcards and, of course, drinking numerous cups of tea.
I’ve recently undertaken the position of Writer In Residence at Surface Gallery and I’m excited to develop the role – I already have so many ideas. My first project will be to interview a number of the artists who have submitted postcards and feature that on the Surface Gallery blog over the course of the exhibition (which runs for a month). Bookmark this link http://www.surfacegallery.org/blog/ to keep up with my writing for the gallery.
Anyway, the exhibition has an open submission call which means that anyone, from anywhere can submit and I couldn’t resist. I got out my yarns and my hooks and whipped up a couple of postcards to feature alongside the hundreds of others in the show. I’ll show you a picture of them on my shelf and then next week when the exhibition is up I’ll do a post and some photos of them sandwiched between some other wonderful works of art.
One of the best parts of the exhibition is that if your work goes unsold you can opt in to get your postcard randomly exchanged with another! So at the end of the exhibition instead of going to pick up my own postcards I’ll be picking up three other tiny artworks.
